Michigan Home Energy Rebates make a difference

Molnar qualified for a $20,000 HOMES rebate for a home energy assessment and to install an HVAC heat pump and heat pump water heater, and a HEAR rebate of $6,500 [GG1.1]for an electrical panel upgrade and wiring.

She said her home was in rough shape when she moved in two years ago, and the MiHER upgrades have helped make it a good place to live even through a cold, Upper Peninsula winter.

MiHER’s goal is to fund energy efficiency and electrification upgrades for approximately 15,000 homes in Michigan. To make sure all eligible Michiganders have equitable access, rebates are being distributed across 10 districts covering the state. Each region receives a base allocation plus additional funding based on its proportion of low-income Michiganders and their associated energy burden.

In the Marquette district, covering the Upper Peninsula, 400 homeowners so far have been approved for participation in the program, 90 projects are underway, 40 projects are completed, and more than $595,000 in HOMES and HEAR rebates have been distributed.

In the Detroit district, participation levels are nearing MiHER’s funding cap for single-family projects, leading to a temporary pause in approvals. The program will keep reviewing and processing applications already submitted for Detroit district properties and will reopen income qualified applications once EGLE determines there is sufficient capacity to take on additional projects in the district.

For MiHER participants, potential funding amounts depend on household income, identified energy efficiency upgrades, estimated energy savings, rebate limits set by EGLE and the U.S. Department of Energy, and total project costs.

Interested homeowners can assess their eligibility by using an online AMI calculator, submitting an application, and choosing a prequalified contractor who will schedule a home assessment to identify eligible upgrades and estimate rebate amounts. The contractor will complete the energy upgrades and receive the rebate. Homeowners don’t have to pay up front for the covered rebate amount.

EGLE is taking applications from low-to-moderate-income residents across the state, with the temporary exception of the Detroit district.

Information is available on a frequently asked questions webpage or by contacting the MiHER support team at 855-510-7080 or MiEnergyRebates@CLEAResult.com.

The MiHER program is seeking not only homeowners but contractors to participate. Contractors provide home energy assessments and install energy efficiency and electrification measures. Those who participate in other Michigan energy efficiency programs may already meet many of the program’s participation requirements.
